The accommodation at Pennsylvania Castle, Raffles comprises of a drawing room on the ground floor with sea views and access to the terrace with enough seating for nine, open fireplace, 40" TV with Sky HD and dining table with seating for ten. The study has views over the garden with two chesterfield sofas, two armchairs and pouffe, TV with Sky and Wii games console. The library is a circular room as it is based in the turret with two three seater sofas, two armchairs and a selection of board games and books. The conservatory has wonderful sea views, access to the terrace seating for six on Rattan furniture and a dining table with seating for eight.
The kitchen is a lavish affair with marble work surfaces, double electric fan assisted oven with integral grill, six burner gas hob, separate electric hob, large American fridge, dishwasher and table island with seating for eight. There is a utility area with freezer and sink and another utility area for laundry with washing machine and tumble dryer. There is the formal dining room with table and chairs for sixteen with a fully furnished adjoining bar area including glass washer and ice making machine.
The sleeping arrangements are just as grand. The master bedroom, Cape Schanck is located on the first floor with a super king sized bed, free standing wardrobe, dressing table and chest of drawers. The en-suite bathroom has a walk in shower cubicle, free standing bath, hand basin and toilet. Bedroom two is Half Moon located on the first floor and arranged as a king size double with built in wardrobe, dressing table, chest of drawers and en-suite shower room with toilet and hand basin. Bedroom three is Raffles, also located on the first floor with a super king size bed, free standing wardrobe, dressing table, chest of drawers and en-suite shower room with hand basin and toilet. Bedroom four is Lamaoros on the first floor which has a king sized four poster bed, free standing wardrobe, dressing table and chest of drawers with an en-suite walk in shower, hand basin and toilet. Bedroom five is Royal, located on the first floor, a king size double with in built wardrobe, dressing table and chest of drawers. The en-suite has a shower cubicle, hand basin and toilet. Bedroom six is Margaret River, located on the mezzanine floor with two extra large single beds, free standing wardrobe, dressing table and bedside chest of drawers. The en-suite bathroom has a walk in shower cubicle, hand basin and toilet. Bedroom seven, Print Hall, is also located on the mezzanine level with two extra large single beds, dressing table and chest of drawers. The en-suite bathroom has a bath with shower over, hand basin and toilet.
Outdoors there are large, enclosed private gardens with a number of themes with several ponds, a waterfall, terrace complete with furniture, additional patio areas perfect for al fresco dining, well manicured lawns and those amazing views. There is ample, secure parking. Please note the swimming pool is open between October and March. Outside these months the swimming pool is covered and large garden games are available. Wakeham is full of traditional quarryman's cottages dating back two to three hundred years. Although a small area it is packed with interest. Pennsylvania castle was built in 1800 by John Penn, grandson of the founder of Pennsylvania, and is now a private residence. Just round the corner from this is the Portland Museum, Rufus Castle, the ruins of St Andrews Church with its "pirate" graves and onwards to Church Ope Cove.Read more
There are several good walks again from Wakeham including the two butterfly reserves within easy reach. A walk along the coast down to Portland Bill will take about 45 minutes depending on how long you stop to take in the views and the wildlife. Walks along the old railway line and back to the top of the island are also available from Wakeham.
The Hayloft Cafe is open throughout the summer season for coffees and light lunches. Otherwise, it is just a short walk into Easton where there are a number of choices or by car you can reach any of Portland's eating out establishments in under 5 minutes.Read less
