Castletown

Castletown was once the gateway to the Naval Dockyard. Today it is the hub of a vibrant area with a thriving leisure and watersports industry. Portland Marina itself has 560 berths. Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy offers tuition for windsurfing, sailing and kitesurfing from beginner to expert. You can find a wetsuit and drysuit shop with chandlers and one or two places to purchase a yacht. Whilst all this new development has gone on, the history of the area has thankfully remained. Portland Castle, built in 1539, is in the heart of Castletown. This is an artillery fort constructed during the reign of Henry VIII and now run by the English Heritage. The Castletown D-Day Centre has been running since 2017. It is the number one attraction on Portland giving a perspective to the D-Day landings with a Sherman Tank and full-size Spitfire. Portland Harbour is on your doorstep and a strenuous walk up the hill will take you to the High Angle Battery. Eat out locally at the Cove Inn and watch the sun go down over Chesil Beach. Quiddles Cafe also enjoys views over Chesil Cove or try The Boat That Rocks for views over the Marina.
