Chiswell

Chiswell was once the biggest settlement on Portland but with its close proximity to the sea, the hurricane of 1824 changed that. These days the sea defences protect Chiswell and its charm. Chesil Beach is right on your doorstep, so walks or any activity to do with the sea is very close to hand. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Centre is also a short walk away. Look out for the beautiful walled community garden near Great Ope for a very tranquil 10 or 15 minutes. Visit the Chesil Beach Visitor Centre, a 15-minute walk away or roughly 2 minutes by car. Learn all about Chesil Beach and the varied wildlife that live there. Attached to the Centre is the Taste Cafe that serves food all through the day. For going out for a drink or something to eat and you are in for a treat. The 18th century Cove House Inn sits alongside Chesil Beach and is an excellent place to watch the sun go down. Further round Chesil Cove sits Quiddles Cafe. There is also an Indian restaurant/takeaway if you fancy something a little more exotic. The wonderful Chesil Chippie has locally caught fish and the Portland Pizza Company has take out wood-fired pizzas.
