Area Details

Wakeham

Wakeham is full of traditional quarryman's cottages which date back hundreds of years. Although a small area, it is full of interest. Pennsylvania Castle, built in 1800 by John Penn, the grandson of the founder of Pennsylvania, makes quite the sight. It is now a private house that you can hire for the most fabulous holiday. Round the corner from this is the Portland Museum and the ruins of the 12th century Rufus Castle. The ruins of St Andrews Church overlooks the sea. Find the "pirate" graves with their skull and crossbones. Continue to Church Ope Cove, the best beach on Portland.

There are several good walks from Wakeham. Walk to two butterfly reserves, excellent when the buddleia are in flower. A walk along the coast down to Portland Bill will take about 45 minutes. This may take longer if you want to take in all the views and the wildlife. Walks along the old railway line and back to the top of the island are also available from Wakeham. The Hayloft Cafe is open throughout the summer season for coffees and light lunches. Otherwise, a short Easton gives extra choices. By car, you can reach any of Portland's eating out establishments in under 5 minutes.
