Area Details

Southwell is a small village where you are never too far from the sea. The area has a long history and many of the properties date back hundreds of years housing. As a result, many cottages are old Fishermans or Quarryman's cottages made from Portland stone. Like all Portland, there are several good walks. Head north along the coast, past the viewing point at Cheyney Weares, or stop to take in the view. Continue along to the beach at Church Ope and then up past Pennsylvania Castle to Portland Museum. Heading south, again along the coast, towards Portland Bill where on wet days you may be able to find the waterfall.  There are many points of interest along the way including the Bird Observatory, the blowhole and the boat lift. Another option is to head across the fields to Westcliff for a more countryside walk ending with panoramic views over Lyme Bay. In conclusion, Southwell makes for an excellent base for those keen on walking. There is only the one pub in Southwell, the Eight Kings, that serves food at lunch and in the evenings.
